FEATURING NORMA KAMALI

BY HAL RUBENSTEIN

Forget the age that appears on her driver's license. Norma Kamali may be the youngest, most vibrant person you will ever meet. Calm in manner, but almost explosive with positive energy, it's fitting that one of America's most original and influential talents brazenly titled her newest book I am Invincible, because Kamali is inarguable proof that beauty is far more than skin deep, but rather comes from a passionate commitment to self-care, self-confidence and self-satisfaction in always putting one's best self on full display. Because she considers freedom as desirable as diamonds, it's hardly surprising that Kamali's clothes boast almost levitating fluidity, unparalleled ease, and a harmony with one's body that's about as liberating as dancing when no one is looking. But be warned, Wear her clothes and expect everyone to be watching.

INTERVIEW WITH NORMA KAMALI

HR: Though your label is rightfully celebrated for its ease and comfort, did the pandemic have any effect on the design of this most recent collection?

NK: This pandemic has been major, and everyone and everything has been affected.

Clothing for staying close to home is always going to be about comfort and easy care, so I am in my zone in this category. I don't wear anything that doesn't feel good and make me feel good. However, we've now created a flood of dresses for all those weddings that were postponed! The big question is, how soon will everyone have to take their heels off?

HR: Do you believe that our confinement shifted tip women'sperspectives on how they want to dress and how they prefer to shop?

NK: The result has been obvious, and extremely positive, especially for us. E-commerce just fast forwarded to the forefront and now just about every shopper, regardless of age or prior habits can see the convenience. Plus I would much rather try clothes on at home than in a strange dressing room.

HR: You have never looked over your shoulder as to what others design or sell. What matters most to you when you put yourself together?

NK: Every woman should dress to highlight their own authenticity, individuality, and unique individual timelessness - a belief shared with Gabriel & Co.

HR: What looks or silhouettes timeless?

NK: Women want to feel sensual but protected. They want to look feminine but not fragile. They love clothes that are light and ethereal but if they aren't well-constructed, she won't feel comfortable wearing them. You have many options as long as they flatter you and make you happy. However, I have always trusted and believed in the goddess dress.

HR: You radiate health and vitality and that's not something you can achieve by what's hanging in your closet. What are the disciplines you highlight in your best-selling new book. I am Invincible, for defying rime and looking so damn great?

NK: My regimen is simple, direct and doesn't come in a jar:

  • Sleep.
  • Diet (Note - Kamali adheres to a plant-based diet).
  • Exercise.
  • Focus on a healthy lifestyle for feeling good.
  • Most importantly, Aging with Power!

HR: What clothes do you have no use for?

NK: Uncomfortable clothes and anything that must be dry cleaned.

Your age is not as important as noting and feeling confident about what looks good on your body and clothes you can happily relate to in your mind. - Norma Kamali

HR: Hopefully, we will soon be traveling again. What pieces will be the first to go in your carry on?

NK: If I'm traveling for pleasure: Easy, casual roll-up-in-your-bag tees, pants and swimwear, plus wrap and tie dresses like the ones featured in the shoot

If I'm traveling for work, I only need 6 pieces:

  1. dress
  2. A suit with skirt
  3. pant
  4. shirt top
  5. workout bra tank
  6. leggings

HR: Is there such a thing as age-appropriate dressing or are other factors more important?

NK: Your age is not as important as noting and feeling confident about what looks good on your body and clothes you can happily relate to in your mind.

HR: Do you have jewelry that you never take off or wear for luck or sentiment?

NK: I have a necklace of dog tags marking each year Marty and I have been together. (Note: Kamali and counsel Marty Edelman got engaged in November 2020, having been together for 10 years). It's too heavy to wear but it's my favorite.

HR: Is there one accessory that you favor above all others?

NK: A smile.
